The Family (a.k.a. Malavita) is a 2013 French film written by Tonino Benacquista and directed by Luc Besson, starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, and Dianna Agron. The film follows a mafia family under the witness protection program that want to change their lives. The film is based on the novel Malavita (Badfellas for 2010 English translation) by Tonino Benacquista.

Synopsis

In the off-beat action comedy "The Family," a mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni (Robert De Niro), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their children Belle (Dianna Agron) and Warren (John D'Leo) can't help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the "family" way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down. Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings in this darkly funny film by Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter). (c) Relativity Media

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones revisit some blasts from their pasts in "The Family," a violent action comedy about a mob family in France thanks to the witness protection program.
ScreenWize
It’s the jaunty music that gives away the initial mood of Luc Besson’s film about a psychopathic Mafia family in witness protection in the North of France. If that light-hearted tone had played all the way out to the end of the film, there may have...

On the surface, The Family appears to tell a familiar story: a mob enforcer turned informer is placed into the witness protection program while his former associates seek to find and terminate him.

THE FAMILY won’t be nominated for any Oscars and it’s not going to make many Ten Best lists, but it deserves some special recognition. Luc Besson has done the seemingly impossible. He’s resuscitated the corpse of Robert De Niro’s career.

If you feel like being nitpicky, there’s a whole lot wrong with director Luc Besson’s newest The Family. An angry, motivated person could write multiple reviews ranting about its bizarre usage of voiceovers and less than expert structure without...

It’s really anyone’s guess what Luc Besson is trying to do in The Family, a surprisingly flat satire that finds a mob family in the witness protection program relocating to a small village in Normandy, France.

The idea is sound enough: a New York family live in France under the witness protection programme after De Niro’s mobster snitched on his colleagues.

“We’re A Nice Normal Family” stars the Blake/Manzoni family as they try to settle into a small town in France. Robert De Niro plays the patriarch of the family, Giovanni Manzoni/Fred Blake, an ex-mafia who snitched on the mafia boss, Don Luchese...
Shadows on the Wall
Far too dark and violent to be a comedy - even a black one - this breezy crime thriller never hits its stride. It's efficiently made, as we expect from Besson, but the script is both lazy and over-serious.
