Star racecar Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in Cars 2 when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world's fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and the stunning spy-in-training Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer). -- (C) Disney

So considering this is exactly what resulted from the production of “Cars 2,” it’s no surprise that I really enjoyed the movie.

Cars 2 is full of adult humor that some children will understand; which is the big appeal with Pixar films. The writing is top notch regardless of the plot. I did like the fact that they included Paul Newman’s character Doc, but subtly alluded that...

"Cars 2" is a colorful and entertaining CG extravaganza. Directors John Lasseter and Brad Lewis seem to have an auto motive: pleasing baby boomer fans of racing and spy movies.

Cars 2 is Pixar’s loving attempt to emulate the adventures of James Bond and an excuse to work in full-blown chases and fights alongside Lightning’s proper races (themselves as devotedly detailed as ever — check the exhaust vapors on the track).

Sidekicks exist to steal the show, not carry it like Tow Mater is asked to do in Cars 2. The redneck rust bucket is on screen so much that 3-D glasses should come with tetanus shots.

Cars 2 is the kind of movie that crystallizes the futility of assigning star ratings to a movie -- if it’s “good” or not depends entirely on your frame of reference.
